Thrift Store fire causes $1.5 million in damages

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An early-morning fire at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, on Presto Lane, did $1.5 million worth of damage to the 9,000-square-foot building.

"My first thought was making sure everybody was safe," said Captain Ken Chapman.

Twelve Jackson Fire Department units responded just before six Friday morning. More than 50 firefighters battled flames that consumed the inside of the building.

"It's probably going to take us about six months to get everything rebuilt," said Chapman. "It is an absolute miracle. (The fire) Spared the other buildings. Our social service, administration and shelter are functioning."

Chapman says around 5:30 Friday morning the first employee arrived at the thrift store and flipped the light switch on. The employee heard a popping noise and soon realized the store was on fire.

"We are going to make sure that the 52 employees who are employed here will continue to work," said Chapman. "Some of them are on rehabilitative work therapy. They will continue their work therapy and rehabilitation. The families that depend upon us for their paycheck, they will continue to work. Some how we will get the funds to pay them. God will come through for us."

For now, Captain Chapman says he can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

"In the middle, the worst part of the flames, the front part of the store was collapsing," said Chapman. "A rainbow appeared in the midst of the water and everything and the flames. I take that as God's promise that we are going to be okay."

The Jackson Fire Department will begin it's investigation as soon as the building is safe for investigators to enter.
