BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Charles Britt has a plan. He wants to mend fences, and earn back the trust Jackson County may have lost when its last sheriff tarnished his badge.
Britt is the 50-year-old Vancleave resident tapped to take over the Jackson County Sheriff's Department on an interim basis. He will replace Mike Byrd, who resigned after pleading guilty earlier this month to a federal charge of witness tampering and a state charge of intimidating a witness.
Britt has spent 25 years with Biloxi police under several titles and six years in the Army as a military police officer.
Britt says Jackson County supervisors approached him for the interim position. He says they told him they want someone who is open minded and fair. They also told him they're concerned about budget and administrative issues within the Jackson County Sheriff's Department.
Britt says he realizes he has a lot of work ahead of him and he will be officially sworn in on January 6th.
Christina Garcia spoke to Britt and has more details about the man chosen to be interim sheriff later today on WLOX News and WLOX.com.
