Biloxi hero saves man from house fire

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

A Biloxi veteran is safe and sound from a house fire thanks to a neighborhood hero.

The two story home on Hopkins Boulevard went up in flames Saturday night and trapped the owner inside. The story could have ended a lot differently if it weren't for a young man who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Stacy Banks flew into action as soon as he heard about the fire. He did what he says was his natural instinct.

Banks knocked on the door and nobody answered, so he kicked it in. He saw his neighbor standing at the top of the stairs next to the fire.

"He didn't have his glasses or anything. He couldn't see," said Banks.

Knowing that the veteran couldn't walk very well, Banks climbed the stairs and picked him up. He brought the man outside and sat him on the stairs.

Banks said he called 911 and the emergency responders were there immediately to put out the flames.

The owner of the home didn't receive any injuries, and there has been no word on what caused the fire.
