Former Vicksburg Mayor Paul Winfield must report to prison by Jan. 6 to begin serving a prison sentence for bribery.

The young attorney and Democrat unseated a two-term incumbent when he was elected mayor of Vicksburg in 2009.

But before his term was over, Winfield was arrested on Feb. 20 and charged with seeking $10,000 in exchange for a city contract.

He lost in the Democratic primary in May. He pleaded guilty to bribery in September.

U.S. District Judge David Bramlette in Natchez sentenced Winfield in November to 25 months in federal prison.

He was allowed to remain free on bond before reporting to prison.
