After a long night of partying and bringing in 2014, you may want to leave your car keys in your pocket.
The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, The McCoy House for Sober Living and AMR will team up to provide safe, free rides home for New Year's Eve party-goers in metro Jackson.
Beginning at 11 p.m. on December 31 through 3 a.m. on January 1, individuals who have been drinking and who do not have a designated driver may call 601-368-2323 to schedule a ride.
Each caller will need to provide his or her name, location, number of riders and those riders' destinations.
AMR will provide rides as far east as Brandon, west as far as Clinton, north as far as Madison and south as far as Terry.
They will only take revelers to their homes or to a hotel, not to another party, bar or club.
Spokespeople said the project will focus mainly on serving patrons of bars and restaurants, such as those on State Street in downtown Jackson.
The vans will respond to private parties at family homes when they are not busy transporting restaurant and bar patrons.
AMR operations manager Stan Alford said, "By focusing first on bar and restaurant partiers, we will keep a larger number of alcohol-impaired folks from getting behind the wheel. In recent years, more requests for rides have come from establishments than from private parties."
"We urge party hosts to have a plan to prevent their intoxicated guests from driving. Make sure every group has a designated driver, have handy the numbers for taxi services and let your guests stay overnight if needed," Alford added.
