GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - It's not every day that someone else picks up the tab for your trip to the grocery store, but that's exactly what happened for several South Mississippians on Christmas Eve.
Dominique Starr was one of the unsuspecting shoppers at Rouse's in Gulfport to get a $100 store gift card.
"I am excited. I am overwhelmed about it because people don't see that every day," said Starr.
They may not have been dressed like angels, but that's what they were to several grocery shoppers. Anderson Hill and Darryl Screven walked the aisles of Rouse's in Gulfport looking for two shoppers to help, when they came across Starr who was overwhelmed with excitement.
Her tight budget expanded quickly after being given the gift card, but Starr wasn't the only one able to add a few things to her shopping cart. Kim Burch shared in her excitement.
"At first, I didn't know if it was real or not," said Burch.
"It's not that I don't believe, because I get blessed every day, but it just was amazing. I was already counting dollars and stressing while I'm walking through the grocery line."
Hill and Screven are members of Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Gulfport. Their church has been paying for people's groceries at random for years, but never on Christmas Eve.
"Normally, they're surprised or suspicious of what we're doing because in today's society people just don't give away money with no strings attached," said Hill.
Their good deeds didn't go unnoticed. Another shopper realized what they were doing and gave them $100 to help someone else on their next trip.
