Vandals strike in Diamondhead

Posted: Updated:
DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) -

Vandals broke into an abandoned office building on Wednesday night in Diamondhead causing about $25,000 worth of damage. Hancock County and NVision Solutions were preparing to renovate the building for an office for the company.

Shards of glass cover the floor of the former Diamondhead Academy School. Someone broke into the vacant building just hours after security had patrolled the area.

"I got a call about three in the afternoon saying there were a couple of broken windows and we walked up and looked at the windows and then I saw the gate was busted open too and my heart sank," said NVision Solutions CEO Craig Harvey.

"I knew someone had gained entry to the building itself."

NVision Solutions is the company that's preparing to renovate the building to become its headquarters. Harvey doesn't understand why this building, which is in the middle of a neighborhood, was targeted.

"It's senseless. You know you want to do something about it, but there's nothing you can."

Vandals used a brick to shatter several windows. They threw trash all around the building, but didn't steal anything. Harvey believes most of what they destroyed may not have to be replaced.

"There's going to be such major renovations here we may not have to replace and repair everything. We're hoping that the damage is mitigated by the fact that we're doing a full renovation in the building next year."

The intruders made their way into the attic, and one of them even stepped through the floor, leaving a gaping hole in the ceiling.

"Police did collect some DNA evidence, and fingerprints. We're just hopeful that something turns up. At the very least, let the neighborhood know that this does happen, even in Diamondhead."

We were unable to speak with Hancock County or Diamond Head police, because the crime is still under investigation. If you have any tips, you can call the Diamond Head Police Department at 228- 222-4626.
