Police: Brother of murdered 17-yr-old center of SWAT situation

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Charlotte say the brother of a 17-year-old who was shot and killed Wednesday was the subject of a SWAT situation Thursday.

Officials tell WBTV the brother of Jose Orlando Ibarra, who died after being shot Wednesday, assaulted a man he thought was responsible for the shooting.

After that, he went to his apartment on south Tyvola Road, armed with a gun, and would not come out.

SWAT was called in, and eventually talked the man out of the apartment after about an hour.

Police then served warrants to search his home. His name has not been released.

Police are still looking for the person responsible for Ibarra's death.

According to a press release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, officers responded to the 7600 block of Sharon Lakes Road before 10 p.m. for an assault with a deadly weapon call.

They say the victim, later identified as Ibarra, and suspect were involved in an altercation in a parking lot, and that Ibarra was shot.

A family member took Ibarra to Carolinas Medical Center in Pineville where he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective. Detective Fitch is the lead detective assigned to the case.
