Jerry Orr announces retirement as Aviation Director

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Jerry Orr announced Thursday he would retire as Aviation Director for Charlotte-Douglas International Airport on December 31.

Orr, who has been with the airport for almost 40 years, became the Aviation Director in 1989.

The City of Charlotte has been in a legal fight with the State over airport control for months. Right now, the city still controls the airport, though the fights in court are continuing.

Leadership of the airport has been up in the air since the city sued to stop the commission. The commission is currently under an injunction from a Superior Court judge which blocks the group from running the airport or spending any money.

The Airport Commission still has no power over the airport. The city is running airport, but commission members are hoping after the legal fight ends they will take control.

Officials say Brent Cagle, the Interim Aviation Director, will take over as Commission Executive Director when 72-year-old Orr retires.

NC Governor Pat McCrory said Friday, "I wish Jerry the best. He was a visionary leader and I enjoyed working with him for fourteen years as mayor. He set the ground for the airport becoming the dynamic presence that it is."

He added, "I'm also very confident in the airport's future, and very confident that we're going to have a resolution some time down the road."
