The man accused of stealing a donation jar for local cancer patient has come clean about the crime.

Henderson Police say 19-year-old Cody Kurtz turned himself in on Thursday night.

He bonded out of jail Friday afternoon after telling 14 News on camera, he wasn't in his right mind when he took the donation jar from Golden Glaze Bakery.

"I don't want everybody to make me out to be a monster," Kurtz says.

Kurtz is asking for forgiveness after he says a buddy dared him to take a donation jar from the bakery in a month ago.

"That wasn't me that night. I mean it was me, but it wasn't me in the right state of mind," Kurtz says.

Kurtz says he felt turning himself in was the right thing to do.

"I'm very honestly sorry. I really am. If I had the money, I'd give it to him just to help him," he says.

The man the donation jar was for, J Husk, is now at home with his family and battling brain cancer, unable to do much of anything.

"As far as forgiving him, absolutely I forgive him. I don't have a problem with that whatsoever," Husk says.

He's been in and out of hospitals, and is now under hospice care.

"My children have taken good care of me. My wife's been phenomenal. My school buddies have been tremendous, but yeah, if it's three months, it's three months," Husk says. "We go on the best we can."

Husk hopes Kurtz has learned a lesson. He says that's the most important thing to come from all of this.

"I hope that if he is in jail. He can set out and live a good life, live something that will mean something good for the community," Husk says.

Kurtz is charged with theft by unlawful taking under $500. He's due back in court on January 14He tells 14 News that he's going to get clean and try to stay out of trouble.
