BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Big changes are coming to the Grand Casino in Biloxi. Tuesday, casino officials announced major renovations, a name change, and a demolition project.
"That's some of the best news we've heard in a long time, because everyone has always said an eyesore on The Point. We need to do something about it, " said Ward One Councilman George Lawrence.
Demolition on the unfinished site directly across from the casino will begin in January. The Grand Casino plans to create a public access board walk and entertainment lawn in its place.
"We've seen, as a company, this movement toward outdoor entertainment with festivals that are regional down here, and also in some of our sister properties in other markets. We think that's a great space and a great opportunity for us to continue to grow the market and entertain our current guests as well," said Grand Casino General Manager Jonathan Jones.
Those aren't the only plans this casino has underway. This spring, the Grand name will disappear, and be replaced by Harrah's Gulf Coast.
"We're happy with the Harrah's name, because of the exposure it gives us in some of the key markets. The name Harrah's goes a long way," said Jones.
The casino floor will include a new layout, upgraded gaming machines, improvements to the lobby bar and pool, along with three new restaurants, including a fine dining restaurant by well known Chef Kelly English.
Jones believes all the new improvements could also mean more jobs. They plan for the boardwalk and casino renovations to be completed by the Spring of 2014, which is just in time for their busiest season.
