BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - High school basketball coaches gathered for a luncheon at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum to find out this year's Hoopsfest match ups.
It's hard to believe that the annual high school basketball classic is celebrating 20 years.
Gulfport Athletic Director Bryan Caldwell was one of the co-founders of Hoopsfest.
Caldwell said,"It doesn't seem like it was 20 years ago but it was when Jay Ladner was at St. Stanislaus at the time and I got together and had a dream of starting a high school basketball event. The first year we had 3 games and 6 teams and here we are 20 years later with 16 teams and 8 games and has grown in what we believe is the premier basketball event on the coast.
Here's the lineup for Hoopfest 2014 on January 25th:
St. Stanislaus and Ocean Springs tip off the classic at 9:30 in the morning. A girls game sending Pass Christian and Gulfport is slated to begin at 11. At 12:30... D'Iberville and Pass Christian. Gautier against Harrison Central at 2. Arch rivals Moss Point and Pascagoula at 3:30. Raymond and St. Martin class at 5 followed by Blount and Biloxi at 6:30.
At 8 p.m. the Hot Shots 3-point shooting competition. The Monster Slams slam dunk competition at 8:30 and the featured game will send West Harrison and Gulfport at 9.
Pass Christian head coach Buddy Kennedy, who organized this year's Hoopsfest says the classic gives local team a chance to play inside a "Big House" setting.
"It's a great opportunity for teams that have great expectations of playing at Jackson to be able to play in that type of area. It's a good experience for their kids."
Tickets for Hoopsfest 2014 are 7 dollars in advance through participating and 10 dollars at the Box Office.
