Mobile construction company hired for Jackson Co. jail

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A new jail is one step closer to reality in Jackson County. Supervisors on Monday awarded a construction contract to Caddell Construction out of Montgomery, Alabama.  The total contract price is $27.6 million.

The new jail will hold more than 700 inmates and replace the old overcrowded jail in Pascagoula that was built in 1979.

The contract ends months of wrangling over the new jail, in which all the original bids were thrown out.

The county has borrowed money to pay for the jail, but taxpayers should not see a tax increase.  Work should begin by February, and be finished in about 18 months.
