Military wife writes music from the soul

Posted: Updated:
BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Ashley Sistrunk and her husband, Brandon, have been married for seven years, and together they have three children. Originally from Bossier City, LA, they're currently stationed at Keesler Air Force Base. Brandon has spent 22 months of their marriage deployed overseas and that has caused him to miss all three of his children's births.

"It's hard. I try not to really think about much anymore, because I feel like there's always going to be that void there that we'll never experience that beautiful moment together," said Ashley Sistrunk.

Those lonely experiences prompted Ashley to write a song about her feelings.

"I entered a song that I wrote about being a military spouse and the struggles that go along with it. My husband missed the birth of all three of our children."

Ashley's sister wrote the music for the song and encouraged her to enter it into a contest called the Bands4Good Challenge. It's sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, and allows unsigned musicians to enter their songs into the contest. It's also a fundraiser for military veterans, a cause Ashley's husband says is near and dear to her heart.

"She did it because they said they were raising money for veterans," said Brandon Sistrunk.

"She's always wanted to go do USO tours, and that's one of her big dreams. And if this can open the door for her, that would be amazing."

Ashley's song is a heartfelt ballad titled "Forever in Second Place," and her husband says he is extremely proud of all the hard work she put into it.

"I just felt privileged that she would write a song about that. I guess that in her since it helped her to cope with it and kind of relate and handle the situations that we've been through."

Ashley hopes the competition will give her career some exposure, but more importantly help other military wives who may be dealing with the same thing.
