SRHS's stroke rehab program earns advanced certification

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) - Singing River Health System is being honored for its work with stroke patients. The stroke rehab program has earned advanced certification by the Joint Commission on Health Services, and the American Stroke Association.

Patients can use a variety of methods and work with rehab specialists to help them get back on their feet quickly. Hospital officials say what it really means is a much better chance for patients to lead a more normal life following a stroke.

"From the very acute stroke care, what we've done is we've set up a system to where we can treat patients very acutely," said Dr. William Evans, Stroke Program Director. "We know if we treat them, the patients, in the first hour or less, up to three and a half or even four and a half hours, we can really modify their outcome. So people can leave the hospital and independently leave, walking, things like that."

The stroke center opened last year. It's located in the neuroscience building on Highway 90 in Ocean Springs.

By the way, Memorial Hospital in Gulfport also has stroke center certification.
