MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University held a citywide memorial service Thursday for the late Nelson Mandela. The former president of South Africa died Dec. 7 at age 95.

The event, held in ASU's Levi Watkins Learning Center, was to honor the Nobel Peace Prize and citizen of the world, through prayer, commentary and a historical account of his life and works.

A memorial book was opened to the public for signing. It will be given by ASU to the South African ambassador for the people of Mandela's country.

The book will ultimately be presented to the South African National Archives Museum in Johannesburg where it will become part of the nation's permanent collection of items related to Mandela's life.

The event and memorial book were sponsored by ASU's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights and African-American Culture.
