From the Rusk County District Attorney's Office:

Lyndon Hughes, a Rusk County man, pled guilty to a charge of Indecency with a Child, a second degree felony. On December 11, 2013, Hughes was sentenced to 15 years in the Texas Department of Corrections. The maximum sentence for a second degree felony is 20 years in TDC.

In 2007, Hughes was placed on probation for a small amount of a controlled substance. As part of his probation, Hughes attended drug court. Thereafter, allegations were made that Hughes had committed sexual indecency with a child many years previously. An investigator from the Rusk County Sheriff's Office met Hughes in drug court to interview him. Hughes confessed to the indecency. Additionally, Hughes admitted to the investigator that he had methamphetamine in his wallet, as well as at his home. Thereafter, Hughes absconded and was considered a fugitive until recently.

Due solely to the diligent work of the Rusk County Sheriff's Office and Federal Marshalls Hughes was apprehended and returned to East Texas for trial. At the sentencing hearing, the victim gave a strong victim impact statement accusing Hughes of ruining her life. The defendant was represented by Honorable Joe Shumate while Kate Hegar, Assistant District Attorney represented the State.
