MAGEE, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The First Baptist Church of Magee was severely damaged by fire Wednesday morning, but firemen were able to save the main part of the church.

The fire was first spotted by the Magee Police Department around four a.m. The Magee and Mendenhall Fire Departments fought the blaze and contained it largely to the first floor of the building, near the office. But, there was smoke and soot damage over much of the building.

"It was a quick response and the firemen put it out before there was a great amount of damage, said Rev. Lance Work, music and senior adult minister at the church. "They went in a door behind the fire, on either side of it actually, to extinguish the fire from both sides. The fire was rolling down the hallways."

The Magee Fire Marshal, Charles Valadie, had high praise for the crews that went in the burning building and contained the blaze.

"The fire originated in the business office, and spread to the library," said Valadie. "The firefighters made an extraordinarily good save on this. It could have gotten into the sanctuary and day care center and other parts of the building as well."

The cause of the fire is unknown. Restoration crews were hard at work by mid day Wednesday. Nobody was injured in the fire.
