GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - The rush is on to get those special gifts where they need to be in time for Christmas morning. This Saturday and next Saturday, the United States Postal service will extend the hours at 25 Mississippi post offices.
As Christmas draws closer, post offices are becoming busier.
"I know that shipping is crazy closer to the holidays. I feel like the quicker I can get it done, the better off I am of getting it there on time," Valerie Wardlaw of Gulfport said.
Because of the holiday crowds, postal workers people should expect long lines. They are asking the public to be patient and have a few tips to get customers in and out as soon as possible."
"The main thing is to make sure they have a proper address and proper packaging. A good strong package," said Gulfport Postmaster Larry Delahunt. "Put something inside the package so if something does go wrong and it's damaged in handling, something to identify them and the sender. If something does go wrong we have an idea to see where it belongs and where it goes to."
People said since they can't be with the ones they love at Christmastime, being able to send a gift is comforting.
"Because my family lives far away from me and I have to," said Flo Carlisle.
Wardlaw said, "To know that we're at least thinking of them during the holidays and thinking of them when we're buying. Just for them to have something to open when we're not there makes me feel we're partly there. That we can be part of the holiday, too."
If you would like to send your package first class mail and have it arrive in time for Christmas, postal workers said it must be mailed by December 20th.
