Huntsville Stars getting closer to the Mississippi Gulf Coast

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

WLOX has learned that Ken Young, the owner of a number of minor league teams, has been in meetings with Huntsville Stars majority owner Miles Prentice at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Orlando.

Young is trying to negotiate a deal to purchase the Stars from Prentice and move the Southern League franchise to Biloxi in 2015.

Tim Bennett has been instrumental in trying to bring a baseball franchise to Biloxi and he, along with Stars owner Prentice and Ken Young have been in negotiations Wednesday in Orlando.

WLOX has learned Stars owner Prentice and potential new owner Kenny Young have been working on an agreement that would give Prentice a percentage of the Stars once the team is sold. Reportedly, Prentice sees big potential in a Southern League franchise on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and wants to be a part of it.

Before any sale becomes final it must be approved by the Southern League and Minor League baseball in executive session.

We have learned that the owner of the Mobile Bay Bears won't be happy if the Southern League moves a team to Biloxi. He feels like it would cut into his attendance.

No announcement was expected Wednesday. We do know the Stars will play in Huntsville in 2014.
