From the Tyler Independent School District:

Board of Trustees Representative for Single Member District 5, Brad Spradlin, has announced his resignation from the Tyler ISD School Board effective December 16, 2013.

"With an honored and grateful heart, I am resigning my position as Single Member District 5 Board of Trustees member of the Tyler Independent School District," Mr. Spradlin said. "The desire for greater focus and balance on family and business responsibilities has led me to this decision. I am most appreciative for the support of the community, administration, teachers, staff and the Board of Trustees during my 11 years of service. Together, we have accomplished many significant and positive changes resulting in a stronger, healthier district. The future is bright and promises even greater steps forward as we strive toward excellence for the students of Tyler ISD."

During Mr. Spradlin's tenure, the Board of Trustees has experienced various accomplishments including the passage of three school bonds, implementation of internal auditing systems and the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, superior financial rankings, the 2005 Outstanding Texas School Board of the Year award, and the realization of a new Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center.

"The Board understands and supports Mr. Spradlin's decision," said Tyler ISD Board of Trustees President Rev. Orenthia Mason. "Mr. Spradlin has been instrumental in helping move the District forward and his service on the Board has helped pave the road for the continued success of our students."

Rev. Mason said the Board will consider the option to appoint someone to fill the vacancy for Single Member District 5. A special election will be called for May 2014. At that time, the candidate elected by voters will complete the term due to expire in May 2015.
