SELMA, AL (WSFA) -

The Selma Police Department is investigating an attempted robbery that ended with two people dead, according to Police Chief William Riley.

Chief Riley says the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as the victim, in his 70s, was returning home to his apartment on North Broad Street.

According to police, the victim was approached by two armed suspects, at least one of whom was wearing a mask.

In the attempt to rob the victim, authorities say one of the suspect shot him in the stomach. The victim pulled out his own weapon and fired a shot that struck one of the suspects in the head. The second suspect fled the scene and is still being sought by authorities.

A neighbor heard the shots and tells WSFA 12 News the victim knocked on his door. Lee Loveless says the victim was bleeding and asking for help and said he shot the suspect.

Chief Riley says the victim and suspect were transported to a local hospital in critical condition but were both pronounced dead by 3 a.m. Wednesday. No names have been released at this time.

Loveless says he's lived in the area less than a year but says the community is quiet and rarely has any disturbances.

The Selma Police Department, however, confirms that the victim's home was broken into just two weeks ago. While authorities are still trying to connect the dots, they say both the victim and the fatally wounded suspect are from Orville.

WSFA 12 News reporter Bethany Wales is following the latest on this case and will have more information on this developing story in our afternoon newscasts.
