BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Auburn University has announced head coach Gus Malzahn will receive the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award. The award is part of The Home Depot College Football Awards that will take place on Thursday.

Malzahn is noted for his 12-1 season and BCS Championship berth in his first season as head coach in the award notice. This comes after a 3-9 record for Auburn last year under head coach Gene Chizik. A win in the BCS National Championship game would make the turnaround the greatest in college football history.

As for the SEC, Malzahn is the only first-year head coach to win an SEC Championship in the 22-year history of the title game. He is the third in SEC history and the first in 66 years to win an SEC title in the first year at the school.

The awards will also decide the play of the year through a live Twitter vote. Two of the plays nominated were made by Auburn: the "Prayer at Jordan-Hare" against Georgia and the "Kick Six" against Alabama.
