PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A former employee with the American Cancer Society accused of taking money from the organization pleaded guilty to embezzlement charges in court Wednesday morning.

Wendy Perdue, 42 of Hampstead, was charged in October with ten counts of embezzlement from the ACS. As part of the deal, Perdue pleaded guilty to three of those counts.

Authorities say Perdue withdrew money from the ACS checking accounting for personal use, totaling $68,000. She is also accused of making donation deposits and withdrawals into and out of that account. According to the Pender County Sheriff's Office that money was spent on plastic surgery, nail salons, tanning salons and even a Disney Resort.

According to the District Attorney's Office, a plea offer was extended in an effort to resolve the case and restore the money to the ACS.

Perdue will spend the next 25 days in jail and will have to pay restitution of $68,033.21. She will be on probation after her jail time expires.

In the courtroom, Perdue only spoke in simple "yes" and "no" answers to the judge; however, her lawyer spoke on her behalf telling the judge she is remorseful and wants to do everything she can to "right the wrong".

Assistant District Attorney, Joe Bowman, called the plea merciful. "Every plea deal is a compromise, some people would say that 25 days in jail apart from her family over the holidays is not enough, and they are right," Bowman said. "She should probably serve five years in jail, but she paid the money back and the American Cancer Society needed that money."

In the courtroom, it was also revealed that the embezzlement was discovered by a tip from a hotline. Bowman says as soon as Perdue was confronted about the embezzled money by the American Cancer Society, she confessed.
