SUMTER COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents seized nearly $400,000 from three Mexican nationals in Cuba, Alabama following a traffic stop of a passenger bus bound for Mexico Sunday.

ICE's Homeland Security Investigation team also found illegal drugs in the luggage compartment of the bus. In other parts of the bus, agents found large bundles of cash hidden in three suitcases. The first suitcase contained nearly $83,000 wrapped in cellophane and hidden in a blanket. Investigators say the second suitcase contained $155,000 stuffed inside hollowed out shoes. The third suitcase contained $145,000, also stuffed in shoes.

ICE investigators say each individual arrested claimed they were unaware the money was in their luggage. HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) Birmingham investigators seized a total of $386,900 after determining the individuals arrested didn't claim ownership of the money which meant the money would have cross an international border and was a potential violation of bulk cash smuggling laws.

ICE encourages anyone who suspects narcotics smuggling is taking place to call 1-866-DHS-2ICE.
