Dash cam video shows deadly Thanksgiving Turnpike wreck

(Toledo News Now) -

Dash cam video is providing us with another view of the deadly Thanksgiving accident on the Turnpike.

The video shows the car, driven by 24-year-old Andrew Gans, speed past the trooper as he turned into a median. The trooper then activated his lights and went after Gans.

The trooper continued for about 17 miles until he came to the scene of the crash. At speeds of 125-150 miles per hour, Gans eventually hit a van occupied by Wilbur and Margaret McCoy, of Toledo. The dash cam captured the scene as the trooper arrived – the McCoy's vehicle was on fire and the trooper told witnesses to step away.

The trooper tried to put the fire out and get the McCoys to safety, but there was an explosion.

Ohio State Highway Patrol says it's very rare to see someone traveling at such a high rate of speed for as long as Gans did.

"To have somebody going this fast for such a long period of time, from when they were first observed, when we started getting calls on it, to ultimately when the crash occurred, this person seemingly not to yield, not to slow down," said Lt. Anne Ralston. "It is very rare to be going that fast for that length of distance."

Gans has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. He is being held on a $1 million bond and will appear in court for a preliminary hearing next Tuesday.
