School collects thousands and grants wish for one of their own

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) -

It was a normal Tuesday for the sixth grade class at Bay-Waveland Middle School. It was normal until the students got called to a special assembly at neighboring North Bay Elementary School.

Student Taylor Bush did not think anything of it until she walked in and everyone started clapping. She was brought up on stage to sit next to her parents and grandparents. Then Make-A-Wish showered her with gifts from the community.

She received gift cards to all her favorite places, food from Olive Garden and even a basket full of Disney gear. The last gift Make-A-Wish announced was a trip to Disneyland in California. The biggest surprise was it was all made possible by her classmates and former school community at North Bay Elementary School.

"I was surprised," Taylor Bush said.

Taylor was born with a rare heart condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

"The left ventricle never developed so she has had several surgeries and hospital stays, but she's a feisty one," Taylor's mother Stephanie Bush said.

Taylor had to be out of school a lot last year.

"It makes it sad for me because I see she is going through pain," said classmate Patience Zar.

Her school family decided to do something to honor Taylor. They raised money and participated in the Make-A-Wish walk last spring.

"We are just a real close community," said teacher Lisa Dufree.

"Here the kids are wonderful, giving of their time and money, I heard little kids talking about getting in their piggy banks or going to the bank and getting their savings."

All together they donated more than $4,000 to the Make-A-Wish foundation in Taylor's honor.

Make-A-Wish learned about Taylor and decided to use the school's donation to grant Taylor a wish. In just two weeks Taylor and her family are headed to Disneyland.

"It feels good," Taylor said.

"It means a lot to her," Taylor's dad Brad Bush said.

"She is very excited, she is counting down the days," Stephanie Bush said

The students were just as excited as Taylor was.

"It makes me feel good I know I can help her make her wish come true," Patience said.

"Taylor is such a sweet little darling' and a great example. We need every student at North Bay to be full of character, love, life and perseverance like she is," said North Bay Elementary School Principal Toy Watts.

Overwhelmed with the big news and excitement Taylor wanted to say one thing, "thank you."
