It's taken two mayors and several years to get to this point, but the Nashville Sounds will get a new home. A final vote has passed the Metro Council on Tuesday evening, although those opposed to the project didn't go down without a fight.
City leaders gave the go-ahead on the financial package, land acquisition and zoning redevelopment for a $65 million facility that is planned to be built in the Sulphur Dell area near downtown.
"We'll have over $150,000 worth of economic development - job creation, restaurants and bars. We'll bring Jefferson Street back to the days of glory," said Councilman Jerry Maynard.
Opponents argued if the Sounds don't end up following through with construction, the taxpayers will take a $750,000 hit.
"Would you base a $50 or $60 million deal on a handshake? I wouldn't," said Councilman Charlie Tygard.
"This is a revenue-backed bond," Maynard said. "So that's a false statement whenever they say anything to scare the taxpayers. This is a good deal."
There's also been concern about historical artifacts that may or may not rest underneath Sulphur Dell.
"That's just another red flag or should be a red flag for taxpayers," Tygard said.
But perhaps most controversial is the timeline for this project. Opponents argue this city is moving way too fast.
"We've been talking about a new baseball stadium since 2009, so anybody that thinks we've been rushing through this, they must be living under a rock," Maynard said.
Leaders have expressed hope construction on the stadium would be complete in time for the 2015 baseball season.
