Pike County 12-year-old attacked by pit bull

MCCOMB, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A 12-year-old Pike County child is recovering from an attack by a pit bull dog, outside McComb. The dog lives across the street from the 12 year old's grandfather's house on Morgantown Road.

Travonte Roberts is now able to get around on crutches after three hours of surgery on his injured leg.

Thirty-six year old Tasha Brown witnessed the attack.

"He jumped on him and pinned him to the ground and started biting his leg," said Brown. "He ate his leg up. That was the worst thing I have ever seen, in my life."

"I was able to push his head away but he got my leg and started biting," said Roberts.

Pike County Chief Deputy Steve Rushing said there is a law against vicious dogs but it requires swearing out an affidavit in justice court for action.

"A judge would hold a hearing and decide what action should be taken with the dog, as far as quarantining the dog, or whether the dog should be destroyed," said Rushing.

Travonte Roberts' family says he will make a full recovery, but it will be painful.
