HALE COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

The Alabama Department of Public Safety wants to make it easier to find loved ones who wander off. State troopers are pushing for an effort to expand Project Lifesaver to every county in the state.

The Project Lifesaver program allows adults and children who may be prone to wonder off to be fitted with wrist or ankle bracelets that can be tracked.

In Hale County, we met members of the state troopers' helicopter unit and Willie Quarles. He's 72 and suffers from Alzheimer's. Quarles wondered away from home twice in a three-day span over the summer. The second time, troopers in a chopper spotted him a mile from his home in a heavily wooded area, lost and dehydrated.

It costs $4,000 to start Project Life Saver in a county. Troopers are asking for donations to bring the service to counties that don't have it.

"So what we'd like to go is raise enough money so that we can sponsor these counties. Because each of these transmitters are $300 a piece. And our goal is to where if someone that needs a bracelet like Mr. Willie, we or the Sheriff's Office could place it on them at no cost to the family," Cpl. Kent Smith with the Dept. of Safety said.

Hale County is one of the most recent of 48 Alabama counties to use Project Life saver. About 19 counties are not using it at this time.

If you'd like donate money towards help expand Project Life saver, you can call your local sheriff's department or the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
