BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy, who was critically injured in an ATV accident on December 3, passed away on Monday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputy Brad Perry passed away at 5:50 a.m. Dec. 9. Officials with the sheriff's department said Perry had been unconscious at the hospital since the accident. He was 42 years old.

Perry had been with the sheriff's office since February 2001. He served in the Corrections Division until February of 2005 when he was transferred to the Patrol Division in the Bessemer Cut Off. Perry was assigned as a youth services detective this past April.

The Sheriff's Office issued a statement in a press release shortly after Perry's death:

"His loss will be profoundly felt by everyone at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Our hearts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult and sad time. The Sheriff's Office would like to thank everyone for the thousands of prayers and well wishes for our deputy as he struggled to overcome his injuries. We ask for continued prayers of healing and comfort for friends and family left behind and for his sheriff's office family as well."
