Santa makes room on his lap for South MS dogs

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

If you think children are the only ones who sit on Santa's lap during the holidays, think again.

Hundreds of dogs came to the Humane Society of South Mississippi Sunday to get a picture with old St.Nick.

4-year-old Lacey Dennison was near the front of the line, holding tight to her 6-week-old Chihuahua Chloe.

"Chloe's my best friend," said Lacey.

The two anxiously awaited their turn to sit with Santa Claus.

"She's shaking," said Lacey.

Chloe and Lacey were surrounded by canines of all types, each taking turns with the big man.

Every year, William and Marie Boyer are near the front of the line, with their Pomeranians Barney and Angel.

"To send to relatives, to put on Christmas cards and to help out the Humane Society," said William Boyer holding his furry friends.

At $5 a picture with hundreds of participants, that money goes a long way for the shelter.

"100 percent of our proceeds are rolled back into our life saving programs and $5 here at the shelter that can micro-chip a pet, it can provide vaccinations for an incoming pet," said Marketing Specialist for HSSM Krystyna Schmitt.

"So it really is an impactful donation and you get a great take away too."

That statement rang true for the Boyers, because for them, their dogs are much more than just animals.

"Oh, like children," said William Boyer.

"Like everyone says, they're just like members of the family."

The take away was seen best in the eyes of little Lacey.

With Chloe in her arms, sitting on Santa's lap, she said, it doesn't get much better than this.
