28th Annual Christmas in the Pass kicks off

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -

The annual Christmas in the Pass kicked off Friday night in Pass Christian. This is the 28th year for the Christmas celebration in Pass Christian.

While Friday's rain did put a damper on the celebration it couldn't keep attendees from coming to this annual family friendly event. Crowds cheered as Santa rode through Pass Christian in the 28th Annual Christmas in the Pass. The city streets were sprinkled with people wearing Christmas attire.

"I was dressed up like this. She was dressed up like that and we also have the matching socks," explained attendee Tina Dupree. Dupree wore a reindeer antler head band and a Christmas shirt. She attended the event with her daughter and mom.

Each year the event features food and arts and crafts vendors and the much anticipated entertainment. A variety of live performers sang Christmas songs getting people in the holiday spirit. Organizers say the event has a strong following of families. Hundreds still came out despite the rain.

"We're a family town. We know each other and work with each and live with each other every day," said President of Pass Christian Main Street Association Adam Pace.

"It's a tradition that you start and I think that especially after Katrina everybody did this just to make everybody feel normal again," Linda Zeller said.

The Pass Christian volunteer fire department and VFW attracted people to their tent with ribeye sandwiches giving attendees a wide variety of dining options.

"I like that they have a train ride and I like that they have food," said attendee Tess Foles.

"There's all these little people dressed up and you can have candy. It's just really fun," attendee Laura Ishee said.

But the event is not all fun and food. It helps highlight area businesses.

"It's an open house for all the businesses around here in the area to show-off what they have and what they can offer," said the Director of the Pass Christian Chamber of Commerce Jenny Levens.
