More Toys for Tots donations needed

FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Departments at University Medical Center competed against each other to collect Toys for Tots, and ended up filling roughly 20 boxes.

A department called Four North, a med-surg unit, won first place, collecting 300 gifts for children who might otherwise go without.

"It's really about the kids. It's not about winning for me, it's about the kids," says Nurse Manager Kimmen Johnson.

And the Central Mississippi Marine Corps League hopes more people will feel that spirit of compassion. They're desperate to fill all the Toys for Tots needs this year.

"We have about 4,500 kids registered so far, and we have approximately 3,000 toys. We really need toys," says Billy Henderson, Commandant of the Central Mississippi Chapter of the Marine Corps League.

Toys for Tots has a distribution center at 4500 Lakeland Drive. Volunteers work there all day, sorting toys by age group. The program will serve children in 17 counties this Christmas, and that's many more than in years past.

The volunteers haven't even received the registration forms for Jackson families yet. They say the toughest age group to collect for is 10-13.

Distribution of the toys begins this weekend in Issaquena County. Any gift you can give will make a difference.

"We would like to have them on December 12 or 13, but if you can't get them in here by then, we will still take 'em, as long as people want to donate," Henderson says. "There will still be some boxes out, or they can drop them off here, whichever is convenient."
