Holiday shopper tips aim to prevent crimes

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The National Crime Prevention Council and AlertID has issued holiday safety tips for shoppers for personal safety and to deter identity theft.

Safety tips while shopping in stores:

  • Don't buy more than you can carry.
  • Plant ahead by shopping with a friend or having a store worker help you load your car.
  • Keep receipts so you can verify credit card purchases.
  • Don't flash your cash while out and about. Consider other payment methods.
  • Wait to provide credit card or checkbook until the cashier asks for it to prevent thieves from trying to see your account numbers.

Safety tips for walking to and from car:

  • Be alert about the surroundings.
  • Check AlertID free mobile app for crime and registered sex offender info by geolocation.
  • Carry purse or wallet close to body.
  • Have keys in hand as you get close to car.
  • Check backseat before getting into the car.
  • Alert a security guard, store employee or mass transit worker if you see an unattended bag or package.
  • Keep any belongings or packages out of view inside the car.

Tips for shopping with young children:

  • Have a plan if you get separated from each other.
  • Select central meeting place.
  • Teach children how to ask store workers or mall security for help.
  • Teach them your cell phone number.
  • Store recent photos and descriptions of children in the AlertID's My Family Wallet tool, which can be sent quickly to authorities if they go missing.
