Scarlet Pearl can gamble on D'Iberville

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) -

A 36 hole miniature golf course may be built in D'Iberville.  That attraction is part of the Scarlet Pearl casino resort proposed for the east side of I-110.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Mississippi Gaming Commission approved Scarlet Pearl's request to move forward with a D'Iberville casino project.  Scarlet Pearl's current plan includes the miniature golf course, 300 hotel rooms, and a 60,000 square foot casino.

For more than two decades, D'Iberville leaders have seen casino projects like this come and go.  Some have received the gaming commission's blessing.  But, they never got to the construction phase.

City leaders are hopeful Scarlet Pearl will be built.  If it is, they believe it will be a catalyst for economic development.  In the last few days, they told WLOX News they were cautiously optimistic about this version of the project.  "We don't take anything for granted," D'Iberville's Jeff Taylor said on Monday. "We've done a lot of work on our own. A lot of our development plans hinge on a major anchor like a casino. That involves housing, mixed use development, other entertainment, our marina and shore side improvements. It's critical to the development of our downtown area."

If it's ever built, the Scarlet Pearl project is expected to create hundreds of jobs and generate significant tax revenue for the city.

Hannah Moseley covered today's gaming commission's special meeting.  She just talked with Scarlet Pearl developers.  You'll hear their vision for D'Iberville on WLOX News at 5:00.
