Bus driver on 1st day on job hits, kills pedestrian

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A pedestrian crossing Interstate 35 in the Northland was killed after striking the front windshield of a Kansas City Area Transportation Authority bus.

The man was identified as Charles E. Turman, 40, of St. Joseph.

This occurred on the northbound lanes of I-35 just past the I-29/I-35 split. This is north of Parvin Road.

Chopper5 was over the scene and showed extensive damage to the front of the bus.

This occurred about 5:10 p.m. Tuesday. The highway was closed for nearly five hours.

The Liberty Express bus had 39 passengers. A 24-year-old pregnant woman went to Liberty Hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

Authorities said this was the driver's first day on the job. The 21-year-old driver graduated first in her class on Tuesday and received exemplary reviews.

ATA officials said Domonique Clark responded to her training to prepare for moments like this and did not swerve. If she had, the bus likely would have gone off the road and landed in a ditch, possibly causing more injuries.

Clark will receive counseling and additional assistance before she returns to the road, but officials said she is a very strong woman.

A KCTV5 viewer said she was driving from downtown about 4:40 p.m. when there was a man along I-35 dancing. She said traffic was backed up near Armour Road because of how close the man was to traffic.

"He was either talking or singing and would stop and dance around," Lori Leeka wrote on KCTV5's Facebook page. "Traffic was very slow because he was getting close to the road."

The Missouri Highway Patrol did not know if that man was the one struck, but said they are investigating whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the behavior of Turman.

When the WLOX First Alert Weather Team issues an Alert Day for South Mississippi, it is because we believe the  weather will impact your day. The current Alert Day is because of the high rainfall totals we have seen with the potential for more rain. In fact, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday evening.
