Jackson Public Schools bus drivers walked out of a town hall type meeting today with JPS officials. They were there to discuss salary demands and working conditions. The drivers were demanding a $100 dollar a day pay increase. They say they have not had a pay hike since 2004.
Workers also complained that a shortage of drivers has forced them to drive multiple routes and they have to deal with rowdy students.
A 9 year veteran who refused to go on camera,
"We drive these kids everyday, quads triples, you were in there," said a nine-year veteran bus driver. "They need to get it together with the drivers. The drivers is the ones that are hauling the work."
But the meeting was abruptly ended when bus drivers and JPS came to an impasse. Some said it was unorganized and disruptive.
Administrators said the school board approved a recommendation for a new salary scale to become effective July 1, 2014. This means an adjustment in salary.
