When is $2.76 a steal? When it's the price at the pump

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

The website www.aaa.com says the average price for a gallon of gas in South Mississippi today is $3.11.  So, why are four Biloxi stations selling gas for 35 cents less?

As of 5:00 Tuesday, the posted price for regular unleaded at the new Murphy Express on Eisenhower Drive was $2.76 a gallon.  It's the same price at the Shell station at Pass Road and Debuys Road, at the Exxon on Pass Road and Popp's Ferry Road, and at the Shell on Pass Road and Rodenburg Avenue.

By comparison, a gallon of gas near the interstate is at least $3.00.

"I just glanced over here and I saw the sign said $2.76," Stephen Merritt said while filling his tank at the Edgewater Mall Murphy Express. "I thought my mind was playing tricks on me. I came to get a closer look and that is what it was so I had to stop and get it while it's here."

He is not the only one shocked by the low prices. Cars lined up all day Tuesday waiting in line to get gas.

Norm Cyr was one of them. "Without a car you can't survive," Cyr said. "We just have to go from point a to point b and without that you are just dead in the water, so saving on gas is something we all look forward to any chance we can."

Courtinee Day also waited to get gas. "It's worth the wait when you are getting 40, 50, 60 cents off of gas when you are used to paying $3.20, $3.25 so this is a good price," Day said.

For John Gudger, who drives a taxi, the price of gas impacts his paycheck. "I drove from the Beau Rivage on E just to get this $2.76 gas," Gudger admitted, "so it gives me more gallons for my gas and it's very important for us. Every dollar counts."

Clark Oil which owns several Exxon and Shell Stations knows that. The company's marketing director Barry Rose said, "With Murphy Express being a new competitor in town Clark had no choice but to lower prices too. We don't lead it, we follow it."

That is welcome news for all drivers especially if Murphy Oil plans to keep its prices low.

Cyr said, "In this economy saving money any way you can it's always a good idea."
