Pass students volunteer to improve their community

PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) - Businesses, organizations and city departments in and around Pass Christian are benefiting from a community service class offered at Pass Christian High School.

It's not a normal classroom setting but students are learning valuable lessons while working at Kings Clothes Closet for the Needy.  Student volunteer Brennan Newton is in that class.  "Helping people always makes me feel really good, so I was like hey fun class," said Newton.

The students will spend a part of their school day for the next four-and-a-half months volunteering at the clothes closet at Central Bible Church in Bay St. Louis.  "Helping people is a big deal and we undervalue that in our society," said student volunteer Delaney Williams.

While here, the students organize and categorize the clothes donated to the church. Their volunteer hours equal credit hours toward graduation.  Church member Karen Smith says it's volunteer help the church couldn't do without.  "You'd be amazed at what they accomplish in a short time," said Smith.

Meridith Bang is Pass Christian High School's principal.  "I think it's a great opportunity because it gets students out of the classroom," the principal explained. "It's real world connections for them and it's a great opportunity they wouldn't have sitting at a desk."

Senior Angela Tran choose to do her community service work hours at Character Publishing, a new children's book publishing company in the Pass.  "I want to start my own business which is perfect cause I came here to do community service while she was starting up her own business. So I can learn to manage the business," explained Tran.

The business owner is Jerusha Bosarge.  "She started off doing mundane task that anyone could do like shipping packages, cleaning up doing inventory and now she has very quickly worked her way up to be invaluable in teaching me how to us my own computer, updating my website learning to design things," Bosarge said.

Students from the community service class are volunteering at 19 different locations including city hall in the Pass, the public library and a nursing home.  They are graded on their efforts and required to keep a daily log of what they did.
