CofC sophomore establishes non-profit, collects 1500 presents for kids

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

When she was in high school, Emily Hoisington wanted to adopt a classroom, so the senior and some of her classmates adopted two.

"I just really felt it in my heart that I just wanted to show these kids some love, and I thought what a better way to do it than at Christmas time."

Last year that number grew to 46 classrooms spurring the now college sophomore to establish Charleston Hope, a non-profit organization that serves title one schools. This year the organization adopted 78 classrooms.

"It's been absolutely amazing," says volunteer Brittany Turner. "The entire community has stepped up from parents in the community, all the way to students, clubs here at the school."

"It's definitely a challenge," explains Hoisington. "Between school and work and doing this, it's a lot of late nights, but it's all worth it. So, I know that right now this is what I'm supposed to do."

On Monday dozens of volunteers chipped in to wrap half of the 1500 presents.

"It's just so awesome to see so many kids my age just coming together and just serving the community, serving each other," says Hoisington.

While juggling school and her commitment to Charleston Hope isn't easy, Emily hopes the momentum behind the organization continues. In fact, she wants to give more, more often.

"We want it to be where donors and sponsors are just falling in love with these classrooms and these students to where they just want to keep giving year-round."

The presents will be delivered next Thursday and Friday to students at Charleston Progressive Academy, Burns Elementary and Sanders Clyde.
