Coast man wants to shine a spotlight on disabled vets

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Saucier man is on a mission to expand recreational opportunities for disabled veterans.  Gilbert Ramsey is passionate about creating a program that will allow disabled vets to participate in a variety of recreational activities in South Mississippi.

Ramsey appeared Monday before the Harrison County Board of Supervisors, and asked the county to support his efforts.

Ramsey is applying for a grant from BP to help finance his project.  He's especially interested in expanding outdoor recreation for the disabled.

"To accommodate everybody, including their loved ones and caretakers to enjoy nature observation," Ramsey told supervisors. "Fishing, whatever they might need to do. I'm rolling into the Special Olympics. I've talked to the Special Olympics this year at the fairgrounds because I know there's horseback riding events."

Ramsey would like to incorporate some of his ideas into a proposed new sports complex off Highway 15.  He'll appear before the D'Iberville City Council to discuss that possibility.
