MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - During a special called meeting Monday afternoon, Shelby County Commissioners unanimously approved agreements with Bartlett, Millington, and Collierville, allowing them to move forward in forming their own school districts.

Each of the suburbs reached an agreement with Shelby County Schools to pay a certain amount in order to use buildings owned by the school district.

Mayors of the three suburbs say the decision was a long time coming.

"A lot of time, energy, and money to get us where we wanted to be," said Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald.

"Very encouraging obviously," agreed Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner. "Two hurdles passed but not the end of the show."

"Our school board has already done a lot of work with the transition committee and the next thing will be for the school board to get a superintendent hired," explained Millington Mayor Terry Jones.

The final step in the battle for municipal schools will be final approval by Federal Judge Hardy Mayes, and others.

"The City of Memphis and the Memphis City Council still has to agree to come out of the law settlement as well," said McDonald.

Commissioner Henri Brooks, who could not attend Monday's meeting, said in a letter she would have voted against the municipal schools in the three suburbs. The letter said the districts leave questions of equity and fairness.

Most of the new school districts' school board members were sworn in Monday night. But a man that more than one municipality wanted as superintendent dropped out. Former Shelby County Schools superintendent John Aitken, hired as a consultant by a number of municipalities, told at least two of them Monday he was no longer interested in their superintendent's job.

One of the municipalities that had a ceremony was Germantown, which is the only suburb that has yet to reach an agreement on the merger issue. The Germantown school board hired from a search firm concerning two superintendent candidates.

Mayor Sharon Goldsworthy said that the city is still at odds over three school buildings and student population, but she hopes to reach an agreement with SCS sooner rather than later.

"Our goal is to proceed in such a way that we can open the Germantown school district, in Germantown, next August. [The number of schools has yet] to be determined," said Goldsworthy.

The Germantown board will interview the two other superintendent candidates in two weeks, one of whom is current regional SCS superintendent Lee-Ann Kight.
