Volunteers help Harrison County woman clean her property

Posted: Updated:

Velia Alarcon can breathe a little easier today.  The military veteran no longer faces the prospect of Harrison County cleaning up her property.

Previously, the Harrison County Board of Supervisors had given her a 45 day extension to clean up the lot on Bayview Street.  Alarcon's plight sparked a response from the community. Volunteers pitched in to help clean up the site.

Today, the county's code enforcement officer told supervisors the condition of the land was now acceptable. Supervisors then voted unanimously to remove the clean up order.

Just last year, Alarcon's home was destroyed by fire.  And soon after, she was deployed to Afghanistan.  Upon returning from combat duty, she was homeless and suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome.
