Overnight fire chars Biloxi apartment

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Two men will soon start sifting through their charred apartment after it caught fire late last night.  The fire sparked unit inside the Andrews Apartment complex on Pass Road in Biloxi around 11:00 last night.

One resident told us he was watching TV and turned on the heater.  That's when black smoke filled the apartment.

Crews were able to contain the fire within 15 minutes.  Fire investigators say it appears the fire was caused by a mechanical failure in the heating system.  Biloxi fire chief Joe Boney says that's something we all need to be careful of during these colder months.

"They need to make sure their systems are maintained and checked well. And have a maintenance check done on them each year," the chief said.

Everybody escaped the Biloxi apartment without needing medical assistance.  The apartment was heavily damaged by smoke and water.  And one of the units below also sustained water damage.
