Picayune holds off Laurel to claim 5A South State Title

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - Picayune looked as if they would run away with the 5A South State Championship jumping out to a 35-7 lead after three periods.

Laurel wouldn't go away.  The Golden Tornadoes would go on a 21-0 run in the 4th period to close the gap.

Coach Dodd Lee's Maroon Tide would hang tough and secured the 11th win of the season against 2 losses, handing the Golden Tornadoes their second loss of the season against 12 victories.

DeAndre Anderson scored from 12 yards out to give the Maroon Tide a 7-nothing lead after recovering a muffed punt.

Preston Dedeaux would crack the Golden Tornadoes goal line from two yards out propelling Picayune in front 14-zip.

Dedeaux would bag his second touchdown on the night with a 50-yard gallop blazing past Laurel on his way into the end zone.

Laurel closed the gap 21-7 on a touchdown pass from Keon Howard to Octavious Cooley.

Picayune would tack on seven more points before halftime on a 48-yard touchdown run by Kadarius Cross.

Cross would add another touchdown for the Maroon Tide on a one-yard plunge and it looked as if the game was over. Not so.

Give Laurel credit for adding 21 unanswered points in the 4th period to close the gap.

Picayune would prevail 35-28 and will face Oxford December 7 at 7:30 in Jackson's Mississippi Memorial Stadium.

Oxford defeated Jackson Callaway 23-7.

Maroon Tide coach Dodd Lee and his Maroon Tide are looking for another 5A State Championship.  Picayune captured the 2011 state trophy by beating Starkville.
