Shoppers urged to support small businesses Saturday

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

With Black Friday behind us, it's time to shop local. Small Business Saturday is celebrated nationwide; 2013 will be the fourth year for the annual event. The goal is to encourage shoppers to patronize locally-owned small businesses.

Downtown Franklin is offering incentives to bring people out, including decorated shops, refreshments, and a program where participating merchants will give shoppers 10 percent their purchase when they present a receipt from another participating merchant.

Savory Spice Shop is a new locally-owned business on Main Street. It opened six weeks ago. Owner Hollie Rollins encourages shoppers to open their sample bottles and sniff and taste to their heart's content.

"If you're curious just pop it open from the big side and smell it, and then taste from the small side. Put a little bit of it on your hand and when you're done with it, throw it on the floor," Rollins said.

Local stores keep money in the local economy and create jobs.

"I thought I was going to employ 3 people when we opened our business. We're now at nine," Rollins said.

Amy Ross and her husband made it a point to spend Friday afternoon in downtown Franklin.

"We want to support our local community as much as possible. So we came here specifically today to support the small shops," Ross said.

At the Iron Gate on Main Street, Rozanne Jackson specializes in holiday décor and scented candles. She relies on support from local customers.

"It's everything. We wouldn't be here if we didn't have all the local friends of the Iron Gate. It's big for us," Jackson said.

American Express says more than 103 million people patronized locally-owned stores and restaurants across the country in 2012, spending an estimated $5.5 billion.
