JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A wreck slowed traffic on I-55 Friday afternoon, after a vehicle left the road with three people inside.

The accident happened in the northbound lane, just north of Byram.

Firefighters on the scene said the driver of a Ford Expedition left the road to avoid hitting a car that had stopped in the middle of the interstate.

The vehicle flipped twice and landed upright. A female driver and two children, including an infant, were inside. All three were buckled in properly.

The children were both in their car seats. First responders said the kids didn't appear to be hurt at all. The driver of the vehicle received minor injuries.

Byram Fire Chief Marshall Robinson said, "It's quite possible we could have been responding to a fatality accident with those type of events. If those children had not been in restraints it's possible they could have been ejected from the vehicle. The driver could have been ejected from the vehicle. So it's extremely important that the driver, their occupants all wear their restraint devices, it's the law."

The children were ages 7-weeks-old, and 18-months-old. They were all taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Jackson police and fire responded to the wreck.
