Huntsville Hospital brings nursery to mom during 'Golden Hour'

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Catherine and Blake Brown are new parents to Reese Brown, born Nov. 22. They have an older child, three-year-old Scarlet. While both girls were delivered by C-section, the actual delivery was very different.

Catherine remembers Scarlet's birth thusly.

"When they took her out, they brought her over and I got to see her for a very short time - just long enough to give her a kiss and then she was gone," she said.

They didn't see each other for hours.

This time with Reese, the delivery care team and Blake were all right there.

"They're assessing her. They bring her over and they let me see her... for a while actually. I get to come in there and they're waiting on me and I get to nurse her and touch her," recalled Catherine.

That first hour is called the "golden hour." R.N. April Dais is a member of the team and a mother/baby nurse at Huntsville Hospital.  She explained how the Golden Hour works.

"Basically we bring the nursery to the mom instead of the baby to the nursery. That way the baby and the mother get to stay together the whole process," said Dais.

Another member of the team is R.N. Laura Deffenbaugh. "It's very important because in those first initial minutes the mom is the one getting that skin to skin time with the baby and really establishing that first bond," she explained.

Catherine is also a nurse who put a lot of research into this new method. "Their temperature stabilizes. Their blood sugar stabilizes. They learn to feed. They latch on so much better."

It's pretty special for Dad too. "The thing that was so special about this opportunity compared to the last one was being together as a family, said Blake Brown.

"It's a totally different experience," added Catherine.
