Shoppers try to stay civil throughout Holiday shopping

Posted: Updated:

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Black Friday is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and tensions were high in the parking lots as shoppers fought for parking spots and access to the best deals.

In a Myrtle Beach Police report, one woman claims a man damaged her car in the parking lot of Coastal Grand Mall around 7:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

She claims the man pulling out in front of her without yielding. She blew her horn, and says the man started following her through the parking lot and banging on her windows. He then threatened to have her "banned from the mall," the police report states.

The man allegedly kicked her car and left a dent. A witness confirmed her side of the story, but the man told a different story to the police.

He claims the woman cut him off and when he confronted her, she almost hit him. He says he never kicked her car.

No one was charged, but the woman says she'll be filing a civil suit for the damages.

Other shoppers out for Black Friday say while they didn't witness too much aggression this year, high tempers are almost a given.

"They'll be like 'This is mine! I saw it first! Don't even come near me, this is my sweater!'" said seasoned Black Friday shopper Korie Smith. "I'm like 'Calm down, woman! I don't want your sweater!'"

Smith is visiting the Grand Strand from Florida, she says shoppers here seem more civil.

At Coastal Urge in the Market Common, Jeoffrey Nathan says an occasional aggressive shopper is expected on Black Friday, but keeping the shop mellow keeps tempers cool.

"We make sure we greet everybody and chat everybody up," Nathan says. "Make sure everybody finds what they're looking for, even if it's at another retailer."
